These ‘conveniences’ come at a very high cost…
Why our environment matters to our health
Home Toxicity is a subject little discussed in New Zealand but once you dive into it, it’s hard to ignore what you learn.
Overwhelming scientific evidence in both the US and Europe indicates that the air within our homes is polluted (up to 2 to 5 times more polluted than the air outside), and that illness caused by exposure to these pollutants can be a serious threat to our health.
It’s simple - the air that we breathe is what nourishes us and keeps us alive.
Painful allergies and irritations, degenerative diseases and other chronic and acute illnesses are all on the rise, studies around the world are directly linking this exponential increase to harmful chemicals in the air.
Toxic burden and our immune system
Our body’s natural detox system is not designed for the 1000’s of chemicals we are exposed to in everyday life.
Chemicals in the environment enter our bodies in the food we eat, the things we drink, the air we breathe, and everyday products that touch our skin. These chemicals are stored in body tissue, blood, or bones, creating a Body Burden.
Body burden refers to the accumulation of synthetic chemicals that are stored in the human body at detectable levels. Our bodies can carry a burden of chemicals and pollutants (both naturally occurring and man-made) that may remain present for many years after the exposure has been removed.
The burden of these toxins can lead to allergies, serious disease, and disorders - Allergies and irritations are your body’s way of alerting you to the fact that there is something you are being exposed to that is harmful to your system, and the more exposure you have, the worse your symptoms become.
Cleaning up the air and surfaces in your home is one way that you reduce your exposure to toxins, allergens and irritants.
What sort of products do you need to be weary of?
The list is long, but here are a few categories of products that you need to be aware of
Fragrances - not only sprays and diffusers, but also the fragrance contained in almost all cleaning and personal care products, eco or not; “Fragrance”, “Parfum”, “Natural fragrance”, however they are listed on the label, have been proven to be neurotoxins and carcinogens. Look out for labels such as "Fragrance-Free", as very often these contain even more chemicals to mask the scent of the ingredients.
Cleaning products - Many Cleaning Products do not list their ingredients but can contain a lengthy list of Toxins you would not want to inhale or touch your skin. However, we use these products to clean the very surfaces we touch and eat off without a thought,
absorbing their chemical residues through our skin - which is our largest organ. And everything that our skin absorbs is then processed by our liver and subsequent organs of the body.
They also release harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) into the air that we breathe like formaldehyde, a known carcinogen.
Laundry detergents - Can contain preservative that are known irritants and the fragrance that they use sits against your skin where it is readily absorbed.
Pesticides and Herbicides – are linked to an increase in childhood cancer, learning disabilities, lowered IQ and immunity and common ailments such as Leaky Gut, digestive disorders, mood swings and neurologically based illnesses such as Parkinson’s and ALS
What to do
Whether you choose to try Cleanz or to simply clean with vinegar and baking soda or hot water and hydrogen peroxide doesn’t matter. We simply want everyone to understand the importance and impact of home toxicity, and how it is possible to improve your health by cleaning up the air in your home.
You can start by going through every part of your home using our Nasties Guide. Remove all and any products containing any of the ingredients on the list, and any other ingredients that say Warning, Hazardous, Use Only in Ventilated Areas, for use with mask only etc.
If you don’t want to dispose of them immediately, simply put them in a sealed container and put them away from the house.
To go a step further, wash down all surfaces (including walls, ceilings and floors) with a soap based cleaner (like Cleanz) to remove any residues left behind from previously used products, effectively detoxing your home.
You can find information about natural pest control, natural personal care products, toxin-free home building and renovation products online, including on our website (check out the articles on our home health page here).
No matter which route you take, we implore you to dive in and learn, clean up the air in your home and enjoy better health.
